EMMO: where Tumblr meets mood tracking

Unusual app that allows you to draw your mood and share it with the world

Most mood tracking apps are actually very similar. They provide you with possibility to track your daily emotions, sometimes leaving comments and saving associated activities. It’s very close to what journaling apps offer but with the simplicity of not writing any text if you’re not feeling like it. They also provide analytics functionality where you can see your mood changes over time and can identify some patterns. I.e. you might be sad on the weekends, or happy when meeting parents. Things like this. It helps you to improve your life by highlighting how things around affect your wellbeing.

That’s why I’d like to write about EMMO. On the surface, it provides absolutely the same functionality. Tap a + sign, fill in your today’s mood and see it on the calendar.

You could notice a funny interface with hand-drawn elements, but this is just the preference of the developer, right? Not quite! Because it immediately becomes obvious: the standard functionality of seeing your stats is hidden deep into settings.

It is also very basic and doesn’t provide the typical insights you will see in almost any other app.

Why is this and what features does the developer considers more important then? It’s seeing people around and expressing yourself with drawing your own emojis. Which actually can be anything, not only typical smileys. Here is how the emoji browser looks like:

You can also easily jump to viewing people all over the world who add their custom emojis and can follow each other, like and comments the activities. So it’s some kind of a social network:).

There are also Universe and Map screens that show all your emojis (not sure how it’s useful but ok) and show places where you created mood records.

Why would someone use these screens and how? I’m not sure, but I do believe they are here for a good reason, I’m just not smart enough to understand it. The cute weirdness of the app is enhanced with the possibility to customize design for your mood submissions. See how it looks in the app:

Unfortunately, it seems that English-speaking countries are not the primary market for the app creators. Many UI elements are not translated from Chinese, so it always feels like you miss something important while using the app. But on the other hand, it’s really weird and cute in a good way as it provides an interesting mix of mood tracking and social networking in one app (with good possibility to show you artistic skills!).

That’s why I think it’s worth checking out for those who are looking for more entertainment and self-expression things rather than analytical ones.

The app shows quite intrusive ads that can be removed by purchasing a premium version. It’s available for bot iOS and Android, go check it out and share if you like it!
