Mood Meter: a few gimmick features and modern UI without sufficient free functionality

Mood Meter is a beautifully crafted app. However, it lacks important functionality and doesn’t have enough features in its free version.

The Spring has come and so has another mood tracking app review! Today I’m writing a short review on Mood Meter. Unfortunately, similarly to the case of Moodnotes, the free version is way too limited to be used on a regular basis. However, this app clearly has much more modern UI, so let’s check it out!

Note: be careful, as soon as you launch the app, it tries to trick you into subscription. However, it’s possible to close the subscription screen and play with free features.

The Home Screen has very nice and modern design that allows viewing all mood records for the day and quickly switch between different days.

The screen also shows short citations that should (probably) inspire you or something.

The mood creation process is simple and intuitive. However, there is no possibility to choose additional activities besides the limited set. And what’s more weird and disappointing, you cannot actually create a mood record without selecting any activity. This leads to a strange situation when you don’t have a proper associated activity in the list, but cannot create a mood without selecting some wrong one.

You can also add a journaling note. It’s nice to have a possibility to skip adding it. It’s strange that the developers didn’t create the same skip possibility for activity selection as well. One could guess is that the app is in the early development stage, you can see the typo in Movie word above. If this is the case, hopefully, the issue will be fixed soon.

All other screens allow you to view you stats (nothing in the free version is available), listen to sounds that can help you with how you feel (only in paid version), and setup reminders. Pretty typical functionality I would say.

However, the app has one gimmick feature that I haven’t seen in the other ones. It’s measuring heart rate with your phone camera. I remember many years ago it was an interesting new feature. Of course, now every person who is interested in it, can by a fitness band or a smart watch. But maybe some will find it useful. Here is how it looks like:

And this is it about the whole functionality.

As a conclusion, I can say that I really love the app UI. I think it’s the most beautiful app of all I reviewed. However, it cannot be used in its free version. It also looks like it still lacks the important functionality when adding a mood, so I hope the developers will fix it soon. But if you like the beautiful design above extended feature set, and also ready to pay premium, I’d recommend to check it out.
