Moodnotes: unusual UI, but not usable in the free version

Unusual interface, but the important functionality is hidden under paywall

Today’s app review will be quite short as I prefer to review the apps primarily in their free versions, only separately mentioning what they offer if you decide to “go pro”. Moodnotes has the standard functionality of tracking your moods. There are 5 levels with possibility to select how exactly you felt, you can also choose activities. There is also a funny little gimmick: instead of choosing one of 5 moods manually, you can look at the camera and the app will choose the mood based on how you look.

Note: I looked sad when reviewing the app according to its camera analysis:).

In addition to submitting emotion, you can also create a separate record type: memory. However, you can do this only in the paid version.

There is also a possibility to view your stats. The screen doesn’t only show the statistics, but also shows which activities made you feel better and which made you feel worse. Unfortunately, the actual functionality is only accessible for paid users, the free version only shows some demo data. This is different from most other apps which offer you basic stats for free.

Another separate section that actually is quite original, is Discover. It has a variety of materials about mental health, it also shows some short interesting facts on the topic. The section seems quite useful as it allows you to understand yourself better. But again, it shows very limited amount of information in the free version.

In general, it’s just frustrating. It feels like you cannot do anything without accidentally tap a button that offers you a Premium trial. So I would say that the application is not very usable in its free version. Yes, you still can track your moods, but as you cannot even see basic statistics, you can treat at as a good demo and nothing more.

These are the screens you will constantly see when using Moodnotes until you either buy Premium, or stop doing it:).

As a conclusion, I can say that you can review the option of using this application if you are serious about tracking your moods and is ready to pay for it. Then it definitely makes sense to run a trial and see if this app works great for you. If you are only playing with mood tracking and not quite ready to commit to paying, it’s better to use some other apps. 1. […] Today I’m writing a short review on Mood Meter. Unfortunately, similarly to the case of Moodnotes, the free version is way too limited to be used on a regular basis. However, this app clearly has […]
